Shallot

Back

Preparation

The soil needs to be neither too heavy or too light therefore remedial action needs to be taken if either of these conditions apply. Plenty of organic material should be dug in well before planting

Planting

Plant in January or early February for best results. Shallots do not like the manure to be fresh or near the surface. Firm the soil then plant the bulbs between 4" and 6" apart, depending on the size of the bulb, pushing them into the soil for half their depth. Reseat any bulbs that become loose in the first couple of weeks.

Cultivation

Carefully keep weeds down by hand and hoe taking care not to damage or cover the bulbs.

Harvesting

Once the leaves have started to die back, lift the bulbs and allow them to dry for a few days. Next, place them on a firm dry surface and allow them to dry thoroughly, turning them a few times to achieve this. Thereafter, divide the bulbs and store them in a cool dry place.
