Malcolm Smith's
Allotment Cultivation Notes
| Back |
Leeks like deeply prepared soil, not too light and with good moisture retention. Compost or
manure should be dug in deeply.
Usually leeks are sown thickly in a single row to germinate then replanted later. Before
replanting, dig out a trench about 9" deep and fork in organic matter then cover with about 3"
of soil.
Keep weeds down by hand and hoe. Soil may be drawn up around the stems to blanch it. Any
flowers that appear must be cut off.
Dig as required.
Leeks can be susceptible to rust or White rot.
