Fri 1 Jun 2007
Weather : Sunny and warm.
Progress : Dug over the remainder of plot 3c. Hoed between the rows of seedlings on
plot 3c. Was given some White Sprouting Brocolli which I planted in plot 2d. Hand weeded
most of the brassicas in plot 3d, transplanted where necessary then hoed between the rows. Put a
net over some of the Purple Sprouting Brocolli and Cauliflowers. Sowed another row of Savoy
Cabbage (Ormskirk). Dug my first Potatoe (Rocket) using my new
special fork - two large and two very small potatoes. Went back
later and mowed the grass including that of a couple of other allotment holders who have done me
favours. Noticed that the Turnip leaves are going yellow and that some of the plants are rotting.
Sat 2 Jun 2007
Weather : Sunny and warm.
Progress : Thinned out the Turnips hoping to improve their condition. Weeded out and
resowed the Curly Kale in plot 3d as only two plants had germinated. Harrowed, raked and
sowed a row each of Radish (French Breakfast) and Lettuce (All the Year Round) in
plot 2a. Topped up the slug traps with bait. Brought the Squash and Cucumber
seedlings from home and placed them in the coldframe.
Sun 3 Jun 2007
Weather : Sunny and warm.
Progress : First thing I found on arrival today was that the pigeons had been at the
new White Sprouting Brocolli plants already so I moved some of the bird scarers nearer. A
blackbird had also been at the Red Currant bush on plot 1 so I have scrounged some old net
curtains from my sister to protect that and the other bushes by plot 3. Wedded and resowed the
Pak Choi (Tatsoi Supi) in plot 1. Sowed a row of Winter Cabbage (Tundra) in plot
2d. Both that and the White Sprouting Brocolli should have been planted in plot 3d being the late
season area but I had run out of space due to poor planning. Found and squashed a lot of
Asparagus Beetle and their grubs. Watered the newly seeded rows and some of the young plants. Had
a good picking of Strawberries.
Mon 4 Jun 2007
Weather : Sunny intervals.
Progress : Weeded through some of the Cabbages in plot 2d, transplanted where
necessary, watered and hoed between the rows. Then I ran some string lines around the rows to
keep the pigeons off. Weeded, watered and hoed the Radishes and Dwarf French Beans in plot 1.
Picked the first small whole pods of Broad Bean then sprayed the Blackfly. Found that the
First Early Potatoes (Rocket) had the blight so I dug the whole crop. About 2˝lbs of seed
potatoes (30 in number) produced a crop of 39lbs. The potatoes varied in size but were generally
between 2" and 3" in diameter. There was a small amount of slug damage. Trimmed the edges of the
grass paths before I went home.
Tue 5 Jun 2007
Weather : Sunny and very warm.
Progress : Weeded through the Carrots and Beetroot on plot 2a and watered. Weeded the
Parsley (Moss Curled) in plot 1 and transplanted where necessary. Made space at the end of the
row for some Flat Leaved Parsley which I had started in a pot then watered them in.
Watered some of the seedlings where necessary. Dropped some mothballs down a few Mole holes.
Had a good picking of Strawberries.
Wed 6 Jun 2007
Weather : Sunny and very warm after a dull start.
Progress : Brought some sacks of fresh horse manure to top up the compost bins
adjacent to plot 4. Weeded the Runner Beans in plot 3a and filled the spaces with some plants
that I had started in a tray. Did likewise with the Dwarf French Beans in plot 1. Weeded and
watered around the plants in the newest row of Asparagus. Watered the Tomatoe plants.
Thu 7 Jun 2007
Weather : Overcast start then sunny and warm.
Progress : Tied up the loose Broad Beans on plot 3a and sprayed the Blackfly. Spent
the rest of my time watering as much as possible including virtually everything in plot 1, 2c,
2d, 3c and 3d. Didn't have enough time to completely refill the water tank by plot 1.
Fri 8 Jun 2007
Weather : Sunny spells. Humid.
Progress : Weeded, hoed and watered the Asparagus beds fully. Weeded through the
rootcrops in plot 3c, transplanted some Swedes, hoed between the rows then watered the plants.
Picked some gorgeous plump Strawberries. Picked the first Loganberries. Planted some
French Marigolds between the Potatoes in plot 3b as companion plants. Put up the poles for
the Runner Beans on plot 3a. Put new fine mesh netting round the Red Currants to replace the old
net curtains which were not really big enough.
Sat 9 Jun 2007
Weather : Mostly sunny. Humid.
Progress : Arrived to find that a perishing snail had eaten five of the six Cucumber
plants that I had grown at home and brought down for planting. Weeded and planted that one
Cucumber (Marketmore) plus a couple of Butternut Squash in plot 1. Watered the plants
and hoed between the rows. Next to them I did the same for the two varieties of Sweetcorn
(Swift) and Sunrise which I had raised in trays at home. Finally in plot 1 I planted
a row of Spring Onion (White Lisbon) which I had raised in a pot at home using compost
from a growbag. Planted some more French Marigolds in the late Potatoes in plot 3b and tied back
the Potatoe plants next to the Peas to give them light to grow.
Sun 10 Jun 2007
Weather : Mostly sunny. Humid.
Progress : Did some watering here and there. Hoed through the Beans in plot 3a. Pulled
the first Beetroot. Found Blackfly on the Spinach in plot 3b.
Mon 11 Jun 2007
Weather : Cloudy start, sunny later.
Progress : Did some selective watering to keep the plants from withering in this
prolonged dry spell. No rain yet this month. Weeded through the Brussels Sprouts in plot 3d and
hoed between the rows, transplanted where necessary, watered and covered them with some pea
netting. Also dusted them with Derris powder as there were some Whitefly evident. Weeded and
watered the Cauliflowers in the same plot. Also in plot 3d I planted out two rows of Leek
(Musselborough) which I had raised in peat from a growbag in in a flower pot at home.
Planted out in plot 1 two Plum Tomatoe plants which I had been given by another
allotment holder. Also in plot 1, planted a Cucumber which had been given to me by my son
to replace those I lost to a snail. Sowed two rows of Carrot (Autumn King 2 - Vita Longa)
and two rows of Beetroot (Boltardy) in plot 3c. Harvested two Cauliflowers which were very
small but would obviously not get any bigger. Purchased two Aubergine plants from the
Garden Centre and planted them in a growbag in the conservatory.
Tue 12 Jun 2007
Weather : Sunny and humid.
Progress : Quick visit to the allotment today. Hoed through the Garlic on plot 1 and
watered.
Wed 13 Jun 2007
Weather : Sunny earlier then clouding up with some rain later.
Progress : Weeded the Climbing Beans, sowed where there were spaces and watered. Put
up a few sticks for the more advanced plants. Sowed two rows of Turnip (Snowball) in
plot 1 and watered then in. Sowed a row of Spinach (Spinnaker) in plot 2b where the first
Potatoes had been cropped from. Mulched the Peas, Mangetout, Runner Beans, Cucumbers and Squashes
with grass cuttings scrounged from a neighbouring allotment holder. Picked off and squashed the
Asparagus Beetle grubs. Had a good picking of Loganberries. First rain since 31st May.
Thu 14 Jun 2007
Weather : Overnight rain. Showery day.
Progress : Put up the sticks for the Climbing Beans in plot 3a. Pulled out the bigger
weeds around the Kenya Beans. Picked all the berries from the Red Currant bush in fruit area 1
which was more advanced than those in fruit area 2. The Onion Blight is much worse so I purchased
some Sulphur Powder to use tomorrow. Other allotment holders will not be happy if I leave the
Onions untreated.
Fri 15 Jun 2007
Weather : Showers with sunny spells.
Progress : The blight has spread quickly through the Onions on plot 2c so I cut off
and disposed of the foliage. I lifted half of the Onions to dry in the conservatory at home and
left the other half for the time being. Dusted the other plantings of Onion with Yellow Sulphur.
Weeded through the Brassicas in plot 3c. Put watering pots between the Tomatoes in plot 3b. Had
the first picking of Raspberries.

suplhur powder as the blight is still spreading. Tied up loose Broad Beans, Artichokes and
Loganberries. Put in stakes and tied up the Moneymaker Tomatoes. Hand weeded the Kenya Beans.

Weather : Sunny start with heavy showers later.
Progress : Weeded through the Leeks in plot 3d and Spring Onions in 2c. Hoed
generally between rows where necessary. Now picking the large pods of Broad Bean so as to eat
the bean rather than the pod. Picked the first Calibrese.

Progress : No work today
Mon 25 Jun 2007
Weather : Rain most of the day.

Tue 26 Jun 2007
Weather : Overcast with some rain.
Progress : Dug two rows of Nicola 2nd early salad Potatoes as the blight is starting
to show. Excellent cropping with in excess of 10 potatoes on each plant amounting to about 1
kilo. Sowed a row of Spinach (Scenic) where the early potatoes had been cropped in plot

as they were infected with blight. Brought a few loose Shallots home. Had a bumper session of
fruit picking - loads of Loganberries, Raspberries and Red Currants plus a few Strawberries. Cut
the first Greyhound cabbage.
Sat 30 Jun 2007
Weather : Very wet. There have been serious floods up country this week and more predicted.
