Thursday 8 February 2007
Weather : Early light rain (not the heavy snow that was forecast), sunny later.
Did a soil test on plots 2a and 3c as they had not been dressed with manure this winter. 2a showed neutral but 3c tended towards alkalinity. Noticed that the first rhubard was showing so I put an upturned pot over to bring it on.

DIY at home today.

Put the shed back in order after the flood precautions. Put some straw into the rhubarb forcing pot. My neighbouring allotment holder showed me some more of the interesting finds that he had dug up.

Sunday 11 February 2007
Weather : Damp and dull with sunny spells. Mild.
Put the seed trays back outdoors again. No work on the allotment today. A bit of DIY at home then watched the rugby.

Monday 12 February 2007
Weather : Damp and windy, brightening later. Mild.
Planted two rows of shallots (Golden Gourmet) and sowed a row of Broad Beans (Giant Exhibition Longpod). They both went into plot 3a which is really designated for late sowings but I had not got plot 2c ready in time. Noticed that someone has fly-tipped a small load of garden rubbish onto the bank in the allotments. On another note, the toads are mating in the water meadow next to the allotments.

Tuesday 13 February 2007
Weather : Sunny start, dull later. Mild.
Sowed a row of Carrots (Nantes 2) in plot 2a. Applied a top dressing of lime to plot 2d. Turned in the top dressing on plot 3d.

Planted the Broad Bean (Giant Exhibition Longpod) seedlings in plot 3a and completed the row with the remaining seeds. The ground is not in the best condition for the beans as it is saturated clay so I loosened it up a bit between the rows.

The White Sprouting Brocolli is ready for cropping. Picked some of that also some of the Leaf Beet which has overwintered.

Turned in the top dressing on half of plot 2b. Planted out the Lettuce (All the Year Round) into plot 2b. They had overwintered in their seed trays during which time they had hardly grown at all.

According to the TV this morning, the past 12 months have been the mildest on record.
