Malcolm Smith's
Allotment Cultivation Notes
| Back |
Carrots must be sown in soil that has not been recently manured. The soil should be free of
large stones.
Rake the soil to a fine tilth them sow into a drill ½" deep and keep the soil moist until
germination has taken place. Thin out once the plants have established.
Keep weeds down by hand and hoe.
Start cropping as soon as the first plants become ready.
Carrot Fly can be discouraged by planting higher crops each side of carrots. Companion
planting onions or French Marigold may work. Drought is likely to make the carrot split
open. Stones will make the carrots fork if encountered whilst growing down.
